University of Hyderabad

Founding and Early Years

The University of Hyderabad (UoH), also called Hyderabad Central University, was established in 1974 by an Act of Parliament. It is a Central University fully funded by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The university was created to promote advanced postgraduate education and research in India. From the beginning, UoH focused on interdisciplinary learning and research, aiming to be a top center for higher education.

It first started at ‘The Golden Threshold’, a historic building in Hyderabad gifted by Sarojini Naidu’s family. The university operated from temporary campuses before moving to its present location on a sprawling 2,300-acre site on the outskirts of Hyderabad. The peaceful, green campus presents a perfect, serene environment for learning and innovation. The Golden Threshold also hosted the Sarojini Naidu School of Performing Arts, Fine Arts and Communication. Today, it is home to the Centre for Distance and Virtual Learning and serves as a cultural hub for the university. UoH attracted prestigious faculty and researchers at the outset, laying a strong foundation for robust growth. It went on to develop a reputation for excellence in fields such as humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and technology.

Evolution and Expansion

Since its inception, University of Hyderbad has grown tremendously to become India's Institution of Eminence providing graduate, postgraduate education and advanced research. From its humble start, UoH has expanded into a modern and dynamic academic ecosystem with 12 schools, over 40 departments and centres and a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary learning. The university currently has a wide range of programs in sciences, social sciences, humanities, engineering, management and arts.

UoH has established comprehensive collaborations with global institutions, more than 100 MoUs signed with overseas universities for student and faculty exchange programs, collaborative research efforts and academic exchanges.
