Founding and Early Years

In 1953, the late Dr. T.M.A. Pai, a visionary banker and educationist, established Kasturba Medical College (KMC) in Manipal, marking the beginning of MAHE's history. This was the first private medical college in India and it brought about a big shift in the country's educational system. Manipal was a tiny, impoverished village at the time. It was a daring and ambitious move to establish a medical college here. But Dr. Pai had a clear goal: to establish Manipal as a centre for international education.

As this concept gained traction, additional establishments followed, such as the founding of the Manipal College of Dental Sciences (MCODS) in 1965. These early steps laid the foundation for what would eventually become MAHE. Under Section 3 of the UGC Act, the Government of India designated MAHE a "Deemed to be University" in 1993, enabling it to develop into an autonomous institution and enter new academic fields.
