The establishment of Savitribai Phule Pune University officially began on February 10, 1949 when the Poona University Act was implemented and Dr. M.R. Jayakar became its inaugural Vice-Chancellor. The institution first established operations at the Nizam Guest House before relocating to its present 411-acre campus which B.G. Kher secured through a 999-year lease with an annual rent of `1 due to his position as Chief Minister of Bombay.
