University Timeline and Milestones:

The establishment of Savitribai Phule Pune University officially began on February 10, 1949 when the Poona University Act was implemented and Dr. M.R. Jayakar became its inaugural Vice-Chancellor. The institution first established operations at the Nizam Guest House before relocating to its present 411-acre campus which B.G. Kher secured through a 999-year lease with an annual rent of `1 due to his position as Chief Minister of Bombay. The initial student body consisted of approximately 8,000 individuals who attended 18 colleges while the main  academic focus remained on undergraduate programs alongside postgraduate studies.

The establishment of Shivaji University in Kolhapur  in 1962 caused the Savitribai Phule Pune University to lose seven districts from its original 12-district jurisdiction until  2014 when it finally retained five districts (Pune, Ahmednagar, Nashik, Dhule,  and Jalgaon). The university's jurisdictional scope decreased from five districts to three (Pune,  Ahmednagar and Nashik) in 2014 to enable more focused administrative management. The university's name  changed on August 9, 2014 to recognize the social reformer who together with her husband Mahatma  Jyotiba Phule established the first female educational institution in India during 1848.
