What Is The Cyber Security Gap?

21-May-2022

For corporate leaders, cybersecurity is always a top priority. The danger of a cyber breach rises as more users and devices connect to networks. Changing work environments, such as mass working from home, can further exacerbate problems. End-users may want more assistance than usual as a result of major alterations, leaving IT teams with less time to implement security policies.

Organizations are having major problems obtaining top-tier cybersecurity expertise, according to a recent report from the Information Systems Security Association (ISSA), despite their demand for these roles becoming more urgent by the day.

The cyber security engineer shortage is one of the most pressing issues confronting businesses today. Because they are under pressure to meet security standards, many organizations are hyperfocused on filling job gaps, but this will not suffice. To address both current and future needs, businesses must create and invest in a solid cyber security engineer talent pipeline.

A brief overview of the Cyber security Gap

The ISSA report offers a clear picture: information security teams are all too aware of the skills gap between what they need and what they have. A stunning 95 percent of the approximately 500 cybersecurity specialists polled in the study indicated the skills gap in their field hasn't improved in recent years. Meanwhile, in the COVID-19 age, cyber-attacks have only increased in frequency. And if more assaults happen while the skills shortage worsens, there's only one conclusion to draw: the cybersecurity skills gap is widening, not narrowing.

Despite almost universal recognition of the issue, most organizations are simply not doing any effort to address it. In fact, according to the ISSA report, 59 percent of respondents believe their companies should do more to solve cybersecurity skills shortages. A cyber security course is ideally the best remedy when it comes to training employees or prospective cyber security engineers. The universal accessibility and availability of programs like the cyber security course online facilitate excellent training.

Ways to go about improving the security Gap

What reasons are contributing to the lack of progress on the skills gap, given that it is so top-of-mind and widely felt across the industry? The findings of ISSA point to a few important areas where businesses are falling behind.

Employing Expert Cyber Security Engineers: Finding the right personnel for the job is the foundation of the problem for most organizations. About 76 percent of respondents indicated hiring cybersecurity professionals is extremely or somewhat challenging.

More Investments in terms of remuneration— Compensation was listed as the primary reason for respondents' difficulty attracting talent in the ISSA poll, with 38 percent saying their companies don't pay enough to attract cybersecurity professionals.

Long-Term training Investment: A long term training is ideally the best method to keep employers updated and upskill their talents. Organizations must prioritize giving constant training, Respondents majorly chose organizations investing in long-term training as the ideal method of closing the skill gap.

Cooperation between Security Professionals and Business: In the study, nearly a third of respondents said HR and cybersecurity teams aren't on the same page when it comes to hiring objectives, and 28% said security professionals and line-of-business management need to work together more.

According to the ISSA experts, the first step in resolving these flaws is a shift in perspective, from viewing security as a support function to one that is central to the company's operations.

Steering towards change

Today's pace of innovation is faster than it's ever been, as companies roll out more and more new technology in an effort to provide the best consumer experiences and remain ahead of the competition. However, as more technology enters the market — from highly accessible cloud-based applications to IoT-connected gadgets — the number of hazards these technologies pose to our personal and professional life multiplies. Meanwhile, attackers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, adapting their tactics to the new technologies that innovation-driven companies are bringing to the market.

The security achievement gap is what we call it, and eliminating it poses some serious considerations. When there is so much competition for talent, how can companies hire the greatest people? What if your current budget doesn't cover the number of team members required to monitor your network for dangers?

Cyber threats are becoming more common, and network infrastructures are becoming more complicated — therefore, unlike old automobiles, the demand for cybersecurity expertise isn't going away anytime soon. The time has come for businesses to guarantee that their cybersecurity teams have the skills, resources, and tools they need to think and act as creatively as other departments. Prospective cyber security engineers must ensure acquiring the most advanced and updated skills and technology through an excellent cyber security course.
