    Job Description :

    RIT is looking for a Data Engineer III to join the Information Technology Services (ITS) team, where we are always on to something amazing!

    As part of the ITS Data Engineering team, this position is primarily responsible for implementation and support of the university's enterprise data, including data warehouse strategy, data engineering, enterprise integrations and support for data science and predictive analytics.

    Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    • Develops and maintains scalable data pipelines, and builds out new integrations to support data analytics and product integrations.
    • Collaborates with analytics and business teams to improve data models that feed business intelligence tools, increasing data accessibility and fostering data-driven decision making across the organization.
    • Implements processes and technologies to monitor data quality, ensuring production data is accurate and available for key stakeholders and business processes.
    • Designs and evaluates products and tools used for data lineage.
    • Works closely with all business units and engineering teams to develop strategy for long term data platform architecture.
    • Performs analysis required to troubleshoot data related issues, and takes a lead role in the resolution of these issues.
    • Defines data models that populate data structures.
    • May perform other duties as needed.


    As a Data Engineer III, you are expected to be a subject matter expert in multiple technologies, products, programs, and process areas. The scope and impact of your work will frequently extend to a variety of other units, teams, areas of specialization, and departments. Work is accomplished with limited oversight and problems may require the development of new approaches, methods or techniques, requiring a high degree of innovation and creativity. You will serve as a trusted advisor to management and share your expertise with others. You may also provide guidance, coaching, and training to other employees.

    Information and Technology Services (ITS) is committed to serving the university's information technology needs. We provide development, maintenance, and support for centralized administrative applications, technology infrastructure, and client computing, as well as support and advice for a wide variety of other information technology needs.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Required Minimum Qualifications

    • 5 years of experience in the analysis, design, data modeling, development, deployment, and support of structured data analytics solutions, such as data lakes, marts, and warehouses.
    • 5 years of hands-on development experience with export/transform/load (ETL) tools.
    • 5 years of experience in structured systems analysis, design, development, and implementation.
    • 5 years of progressive and hands-on experience in designing, developing and deploying successful data analytics solutions that meet business needs.
    • 5 years of experience with participating in external vendor relationships, primarily related to the support and maintenance of data management applications.
    • 3 years of experience in the design of technical architecture to support business applications.
    • Bachelors degree in computer engineering, computer science, data science, or related field, or equivalent experience.

    Specialized Skills

    • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) and consulting skills with the ability to collaborate directly with business partners, technical staff and end users.
    • Ability to analyze complex business and technical challenges, and to evaluate the impact of potential solutions from both perspectives.
    • A strong customer focus and an ability to work directly with end users to translate business requirements into effective solutions.
    • The self-initiative to be given general guidance on an objective, and to achieve that objective with minimal managerial guidance.

    • Ability to quickly learn new technical, functional and business concepts related to RIT applications and tools without formal training.
    • Experience integrating systems across technological and functional boundaries.

    Preferred Skills

    • Experience in developing batch and streaming data pipelines for cloud data lake solutions.
    • Experience with data management tools such as Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Data Factory, Databricks,and Data Vault methodology.
    • Data ingestion, curation, and transformation using Python and Pyspark .
    • Experience in data modeling and advanced SQL techniques.
    • Experience with the use of relational databases such as SQL*Server, Oracle, and MariaDB, from a developers perspective.
    • Experience with Windows powershell and Linux scripting.
    • Experience with job scheduling packages, such as UC4.
    • Experience with Informatica PowerCenter from a developers perspective.
    • Experience with data visualization and BI tools such as Tableau and PowerBI.
    • Experience with modern software frameworks such as Agile and DevOps.
    • Experience with SDLC products such as JIRA, Confluence, and Gitlab, or similar agile project management tools.
