What are the Steps to Apply for a PMP Certification?

The PMP certification is by far the most popular and well-known certification in the field of project management. It is an excellent way to showcase one’s worth as a project manager to businesses and organizations. One can validate their skills, knowledge, experience, and competence as a project manager by undergoing PMP certification training. The PMP certification is governed by the PMI, or the Project Management Institute. By undergoing this PMP certification training online individuals can gain all the skills, knowledge, experience, and guidance they require for becoming capable project managers. In this article, we have listed the steps one has to go through to apply for a PMP certification.

Steps to Apply for a PMP Certification -

  1. Go to the PMI website and find the register button on the main page. Click on the register button. By doing this you will begin the registration process. It is simple to find the register button. You can even find a direct link to it on Google if you search by the terms “pmp certification registration” or something similar.
  1. After clicking on the ‘Register’ button you will be taken to the profile creation page. On this page, you will see several fields asking for various kinds of information, such as your First name, your Date of Birth, your educational qualifications, your address, your past schools or colleges etc. You will have to fill in all the required information properly and then click on ‘Next.’
  1. You will see a ‘Return’ button on the profile creation page. You should click on it to return to the dashboard. On the dashboard you will see several kinds of information displayed. You should browse through all the information and note down the information which seems important, such as the PMP certification cost.
  1. Next, you should find the ‘Certifications’ menu item and click on it. You will see the options for taking several certifications in the menu which opens up. You should select the Project Management Professional or the PMP certification.
  1. Next, you should click on the ‘Apply’ button. You can find the apply button in the ‘Apply for the PMP certification’ area on the right side of the page. This will start the actual application process for the PMP certification.
  1. Next, you will see several links leading to different pages about the PMP certification. From them, try to find the ‘Apply for PMP credential link.’ When you find it, click on the ‘Apply for the PMP credential’ link. That will open the PMP application page.
  1. You’ll be asked to fill in a lot of personal information about you again. Please take out an appropriate amount of time to fill in all this information accurately and completely. Please pay special attention to the fields which ask information about your past project management experience. The PMI will carefully evaluate whatever information you provide in order to decide whether you are eligible for the PMP certification exam or not. So you should take special care to fill in all this information very accurately and very comprehensively. If you lack the project management experience required by PMI, you can undergo PMP certification training online to gain that experience.

Tip : PMI usually takes at least 5 business days to complete the process of evaluating your application. In the middle of those 5 business days or at any time after that, it reserves the right to perform a random audit of your application and of checking your details and the references you have mentioned.

  1. If and when your application is approved, you will receive an email from the PMI on the email address which you have provided to them. They will provide a link in that email which will lead you to a payment portal. You will be asked to pay the PMP certification cost through that payment portal. You will also have to schedule your PMP certification exam in the same step. You should schedule it at a date which allows you to complete online PMP certification training before the exam.

Tip : It is generally recommended to schedule one’s PMP certification exam at least 6 months in advance. This gives one enough time to complete a PMP certification training course and thus gain new skills and knowledge which the PMP certification exam examines.

  1. PMI has signed a contract with ‘Prometric Testing Solutions’ to conduct the PMP certification exam on the behalf of PMI. When you have finished scheduling the exam you will be directed to their website and be given further instructions. They will list the requirements that they have set for the testing environment and the testing system. They will also list some rules regarding the exam such as that the candidate can not leave the testing environment once the exam has begun and that they can not speak out loud or mumble to themselves during the exam.
  1. You’ll have to enter the exam code which you received from the PMI. After that you will be allowed to select a testing center from a list of locations. You should select a testing center which is at a location which it will be convenient for you to travel to.
  1. The testing center will require all candidates to bring a photo ID, preferably a passport, with them on the day of the exam.
