ChatGPT users experienced problems with image generation on July 7 after the platform failed to create images for several prompts. While text chats continued to work for many users, image requests either displayed errors, remained stuck, or took much longer than expected.
According to Downdetector India, more than 100 outage reports were submitted during the disruption. Most complaints focused on image creation, indicating that the issue affected only part of the platform rather than the entire service.
Users also shared their experiences on social media, saying image requests stayed in processing for several minutes or failed without producing a result. Some users reported that retrying the same prompt did not fix the problem, while regular text conversations remained available.
OpenAI acknowledged a broader service disruption affecting ChatGPT, Codex, Custom GPTs, workspace analytics, and conversation search. The company said it had identified the issue and started working on a fix. Core ChatGPT services were later restored, although some users continued to experience image generation issues for a short time.
Users who still face problems can try refreshing the page, signing out and back in, clearing the browser cache, or waiting until the service is fully restored if the issue is linked to the platform.
The outage shows that cloud-based services can experience temporary disruptions, even when millions of people depend on ChatGPT for writing, coding, research, and image generation every day.
