Why Data Science is Still a Top Job?

05-Feb-2021

Data Science is considered to be a top job because today, the world has been totally transformed by Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. There are various programs offered in Data Science, out of them all Post Graduate Program in Data Science is considered to be the top rated program. Few years back, everybody wanted to be a web designer, a programmer, database administrator or anything that would let them be into the computer science industry. Since the salary was terrific, professionals were making serious cash off it. The situation of the data science industry is likewise today. The demand for data science professionals has been rising while the supply is still very low. This clearly determines that the salaries received by these professionals must be outstanding, therefore, more people are willing to get into the data science field.

According to Glassdoor, growth in data scientist job postings were flat from 2019 to 2020 at around 6,500. Being one of the most lucrative fields, its course curriculum has been adapted by many universities.  There are around 500 universities offering 830 programs in data science around the world. Whilst the universities have been hastening the reach of their programs, the demand of data science has risen too.

Where does the Demand for Data Science come from ?

Now-a-days, the popularity of data-driven decision making is escalating. Earlier, analysts used to analyze data via Excel, academics would use SPSS and Strata to meet their statistical needs. But now everyone has access to a data-crunching tool. In fact, technological advancement have lead the way for things like :

For business intelligence needs- Microsoft Power BI, Tableau. With the help of these tools, data can be visualized in unprecedented ways by the analyst and unexpected insights can be discovered.

For digital marketing- cloud based services like Google Analytics

For breaking information and creating visuals in Businesses- Complicated ERPs like Microsoft Dynamics and SAP

For performing complicated analyses- programming languages like Python and R. these languages let you perform highly complicated analyses with a few lines of code.

Outgrowing Demand of Data Science

Any individual who has an interest in the Data world can become a data scientist. There are numerous professionals working in this domain, this field demands consistency and hard work. This field provides opportunities to see the world differently and understand it by looking at patterns drawn out of clustered data. Data science gives a set of statistical concepts and techniques that can be applied to validate hypotheses out of data.

I am listing down some of the well known enterprises that deploy data scientists :

Google - it is an epitome of data science as all of their operations are data driven, be it, YouTube, Google, Google Ads, and so on. Scientific methods are used by the HR team in order to evaluate strategies that make the employees comfortable at the workplace which in turn increases productivity. This is the reason why Google has been rated as the top employer for 3 years in a row as per Forbes ranking.

Amazon- I believe that you are conversant with the functioning of Amazon. For example - You visit the app/website to buy something but you always end up ordering some more stuff whose requirements were not felt earlier. The reason behind the recommendations shown on site is sophisticated data science algorithms. Apart from this, Amazon’s algorithms can also predict whether you are going to buy a specific product. If the probability of prediction goes up, they move that product to the storage unit near you. That is why sometimes the product is delivered too early than expected. Amazon is well acquainted with the fact that “Happy Customers are the Loyal Customers.”

Facebook- first of all please note that Facebook is not just a status and picture sharing platform, it is an assemblage of apps and websites like Messenger, Instagram and Whatsapp as of now. Since all of these apps have intimate user data, Facebook is generating lots of revenue. Facebook is well acquainted with what we prefer, be it cat, dog, sports, food, events etc. This way, Facebook targets you and secures it’s marketing. This may sound frivolous but if you think deeply about this you will understand their mechanism.

Apart from such huge enterprises, smaller ones are also deploying data science algorithms. Google Analytics is used by most of the businesses to make gains. All of the reasons mentioned above make data science a top job and it probably will stay at the top. The demand for data scientists is likely to outgrow making it the most lucrative career choice. This is the high time to break into the field of data science.
