They can attempt the exam thrice during a single testing cycle, including one main attempt and two retakes. Since a minimum gap of 15 days is usually required between attempts, candidates have enough time to prepare for the exam better.

Exam Scheduling Process

The exam scheduling is expected to begin in August 2026 via the official NMAT by GMAC portal, where candidates are supposed to furnish the application form by paying applicable fees. Thereafter, they need to sign in to their dashboard, and choose their preferred exam date, time slot, and test center if available.

Please note, candidates are treated with a first-come, first-served slot booking system and so they should schedule the exam early to secure convenient dates and nearby centers. Since the exam window is expected to run from November to December 2026, students can conveniently select a suitable schedule according to their preparation level. After slot booking, they can download their admit card.

Exam Rescheduling Process

Candidates can reschedule NMAT exam by accessing through the candidate dashboard and paying the required fees (Rs 1200) plus applicable taxes. Please note, you can avail rescheduling flexibility up to 72 hours before the scheduled exam time, and that too depends on whether the slot is available. Also to be noted here is to make necessary changes as early as possible, considering preferred slots may not be available near to the exam center.

NMAT Exam Pattern 2026: An Overview Of How Candidates Are Evaluated Across Major Skill Areas

Based on NMAT exam pattern, students are evaluated across three core skill areas:

  • Language skills

  • Quantitative skills

  • Logical reasoning

In two hours of exam duration conducted in computer-based mode (CBT) adaptive test with flexible sections timed separately, candidates are to solve 108 multiple choice questions within the permissible time limit. This means each section consists of 36 questions timed separately.

Language Skills:

  • Total questions - 36

  • Time allotted - 28 minutes

  • Topics: Reading Comprehension, Grammar, Vocabulary, Para-jumbles, Verbal Reasoning, etc.

Logical Reasoning:

  • Total questions - 36

  • Time limit: 40 minutes

  • Topics: Critical Reasoning, Puzzles, Arrangements, Coding-Decoding, Analytical Reasoning, etc.

Quantitative Skills:

  • Total questions - 36

  • Time allotted - 52 minutes

  • Topics: Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Modern Mathematics, Data Interpretation, Data Sufficiency, etc.

The marking scheme in NMAT exam is such that candidates receive three marks for every correct answer. There is no negative marking for incorrect answers or unattempted questions. The range of overall score is between 36-360, while each section carries the score range of 12-120. Since there is no penalty for wrong answers, candidates are encouraged to attempt all the questions within the permissible time limit.

Flexibility is what stands out NMAT exam, considering how it allows students to choose the order in which they attempt the tree sections before commencing the test. However, that is only until a section starts. Then there is no going back, candidates can't revisit the previous section after the expiration of allotted time.

NMAT Exam 2026: Preparation Tips

The most important thing to understand when it comes to preparing for the NMAT exam is to start it as early as possible. In that way, candidates will have enough time to create a study plan, and walk through chapters, syllabus, pattern, and other elements, such as:

  • Preparation books and study material.

  • Timeline to complete the NMAT syllabus.

  • Mock tests and sample papers.

  • Work on the tips from previous NMAT toppers and experts.

  • Make a thorough strategy for the exam day.

NMAT exam preparation requires candidates to showcase speed and time management, even though omission of negative marking is a plus point of this exam. The reason speed and time management matters is because this exam follows an adaptive test with strict section time restriction. As a candidate, you are supposed to answer 108 questions across three sections each containing 36 questions within the permissible time limit of 120 minutes.

Master Exam Pacing:

  • Aim to solve verbal questions in 30 seconds, quant in 60 seconds, and logical reasoning in about 1 minute.

  • Attempt as many questions as possible. Do not stick on unsolvable puzzles.

  • Since NMAT allows you to choose the order of sections, start with the one you feel strong about to build momentum.

Take Adaptive Mock Tests

Since NMAT follows CAT (Computer Adaptive Test), where difficulty level of questions changes based on your next correct answer, a regular mock test is very essential. It is like taking a simulated test under real exam conditions to maintain time and speed in solving questions without courting the risk of score deduction. It will also help candidates get familiar  with NMAT’s adaptive format so as to refine their strategy accordingly.

Take resort to mock metrics from platforms like IMS India where you will be able to identify your weak spots and adjust your pacing accordingly.

Build Familiarity With The Syllabus

  • Language skills - Read newspapers, magazines or anything daily to improve reading. comprehension speed, practice para-jumbles, and vocabulary.

  • Quantitative skills - This section generally focuses on high-level math concepts, so get better in arithmetic and algebra, apart from permutation & combinations and probability.

  • Logical reasoning - Prioritize critical reasoning and analytical puzzles. Therefore, the ability to recognise patterns and visualise data is critical. Be familiar with the structure and approach of logical reasoning questions. They must be practiced diligently.

Bonus Tip: Since candidates are not allowed to carry calculators, it is essential for them to be good at mental calculation and estimation techniques. In addition, they need to build foundational understanding using the official syllabus guide before they improve speed. Visit the official website of GMAC Exam for targeted practice. And lastly, enjoy the exam!
