Is Data Science Really a Rising Career?

26-Feb-2021

This is not a very difficult question to answer. Many people may become apprehensive at the long time for which data science has maintained its position as the number one in-demand job in the world. They may start asking themselves the question – “Is Data Science really a rising career?”

This is because a kind of fear and a sense of foreboding fills them whenever they think of the position of data science. After all, it has maintained its position as the number one job opening for a very long time now and there is always the fear that it will start falling off or that its demand will start tapering off. This will cause the demand for data science certification courses to decrease directly.

It has already started to do so, to some extent. 2020 marked the first year in which data science was not the number one job opening in the world and the first year in which it had in fact slid down to number three. The number one position was frontend engineer followed by Java developer.

Now after seeing this one may become perturbed and think that data science is falling in popularity or losing its position of strength in the world of technology. But they should remember that rise and fall always come about in any successful thing’s lifespan. The overall adoption and demand for data science are still going strong and will not fade away at any point in the near future. This is evinced by the high demand for data science certification training.

Let us see some factors which indicate the growth of data science.

1. Demand -

Back in the old days, most of the demand used to exist for programmers and web developers. There were huge salaries offered for these positions and consequently, many people used to aspire to become a programmer or a web developer. Nowadays these roles have been replaced by the role of a data scientist and one can learn to become one by taking a PGP in a data science course.

So, the situation has changed since then and now the situation is similar for data science. There is a spectacular demand for data science and it has been skyrocketing to higher and higher heights ever since the advent of data science took place. There have been fads which have come and gone and have risen to become popular and then subsequently have faded into obscurity but that has not been the case with data science.

With the prevalence of data crunching tools like Google Analytics, Tableau, Power BI, Python, and R data scientists can now process, analyze, and modify massive data sets. There is no need to rely on something as quaint as Microsoft Excel anymore. Also, companies like Google, Amazon, and Facebook are pushing data science in a big way by sponsoring data science courses for their employees.

2. Supply -

There is a low supply of data scientists overall and this is because even in the year 2021 if we consider the total lifespan of data science as a field, it is quite new and fresh. So the supply of data scientists has not caught up to the demand for data scientists as of yet.

In fact, there is a shortage of skilled and competent data scientists in the world. Statistics show that data science job openings remain open a full 5 days longer than other job openings. This is because as there are lesser qualified candidates available to apply for the jobs, hiring managers require more time to fill the job vacancies with appropriate personnel. Thus, a candidate with a data science certification will find no difficulty in getting hired for a data science job.

3. Growth -

Not only is the demand for data science increasing but the variety of job openings which require data science skills and knowledge are also increasing. There are many statistics which show a clear growth of job opportunities in the data science field.

For instance, both IBM and the US Bureau of Labour Statistics agree that data science is the fastest-growing field in the world and this has also, directly and indirectly, caused the applications of data science in the various industries of the world to increase.

They predict that the number of jobs will increase by 28% by 2026 with the number of jobs going up by 11.5 million. A good data science training provider will always provide this information about the job market and will provide placement assistance to its learners.
