    CLAT is an acronym for Common Law Admission Test conducted annually by the Consortium of National Law Universities in India. It is a centralized national-level entrance examination for students seeking admission at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels to the NLU's participating law colleges/universities in the country. CLAT 2025 is coming up in December 2024.     Mode of Exam: Offline. CLAT is conducted in a pen-and-paper mode across various exam centres in the country. The Consortium of NLU announces the designated exam centres in the official notification every year. Students can choose the exam centre during the application process and choose up to three centres according to preference. The CLAT 2025 exam centres are dispersed across 23 states and 4 Union territories.

    Types of Questions in Exam: Objective Type ( 120 Multiple Choice Questions)

    Application Fee for Examination: The application is carried out online and students for both UG and PG programmes are required to pay a registration fee in the following categories:

    • General Students: Rs. 4000/-
    • Candidates belonging to SC/ST/BPL/PwD: Rs. 3500

    Age Limit: No upper age limit for CLAT Entrance Examination

    CLAT 2025 for Undergraduate LLB (5-Year Integrated) Programme

    Candidates desiring to study LLB ( Fiver Year Integrated) Law degree program must apply online for the CLAT 2025. The examination is scheduled to be held on December 01, 2024. First things first, they must ensure that they fulfil the eligibility criteria. 

    Eligibility Criteria for Undergraduate LLB degree: Candidates must have passed their 10+ 2 ( Senior Secondary School)  with : 

    • Minimum 45% (Forty-Five per cent) or equivalent grade 
    • Minimum 40% (Forty Percent) or equivalent grade for candidates belonging to SC/ST/PwD/ categories. 

    Students completing their 12 standards in April/May 2025 can also appear for the CLAT 2025. 

    Undergraduate (LLB) CLAT Syllabus 

    The CLAT 2025 for Undergraduate degree program will test the candidate's aptitude, comprehension abilities and reasoning skills fundamental to legal education. While prior knowledge may be helpful for the candidate, it is not a mandatory credential. The CLAT 2025 test will run for 2 hours wherein students will have to answer 120 Multiple Choice Questions spread across five domains. Each question will carry 1 mark each. For every wrong answer, there will be a negative marking of 0.25. The five domains for the exam are:

    • English Language
    • Current Affairs and General Knowledge
    • Logical Reasoning
    • Quantitative Techniques
    • Legal Reasoning 

    Syllabus for LLB Undergraduate CLAT 2025

    English Language

    The English language section is to test student's reading and comprehension abilities. The section will have questions in passages of 450 words each,  taken from fictional and non-fictional writing, which are of contemporary or historical significance. The questions will be in the 12 standard level. 

    The passages will be followed by a series of questions. Candidates will be required to demonstrate their language and comprehension skills. The questions are framed to test the ability of the candidates in the following:

    • Reading and comprehending the central point, arguments or perspectives discussed in the passage
    • Drawing conclusions and inferences found in the passage
    • Compare and contrast the passage's varied arguments and viewpoints
    • Comprehension of the passage words and phrasal meanings 

    Current Affairs & General Knowledge

    This section will also feature 450 words- passages. The passages are extracted from journalistic sources, news, and other non-fictional writing. The passage questions may encompass legal knowledge or information outlined in the passage, and would not require additional legal knowledge that falls outside of the passage. The passage questions will test the candidate's knowledge in the following areas:

    • Arts and Culture
    • International Affairs
    • Historical events of Importance
    • World and Indian contemporary events of importance

    Logical Reasoning

    This section will also feature passages of 450 words with one or more questions to test the candidate's potential in the following areas:

    • Recognising argument, premises and conclusions
    • Identifying arguments 
    • Analysing reasoning patterns, assessing conclusions and how they are derived based on the premises or evidence, strengthening or weakening of conclusions based on the premise alteration or supporting facts
    • Drawing inferences from the passage and applying them to new situations
    • Drawing relationships and analogies
    • Identifying equivalence and contradictions
    • Assessing the argument's effectiveness

    Quantitative Aptitude

    The section encompasses questions following short sets of propositions, facts or textual representations of numerical information. Candidates will need to answer questions by applying mathematical operations, or by using the information outlined in that passage. The sections test the candidate's skills in: 

    • Deriving, inferring and manipulating numerical information
    • Statistical Estimation
    • Basic Algebra
    • Mensuration
    • Ratios and proportions

    Legal Reasoning

    This section contains passages of about 450 words each with relevance to factual situations or scenarios involving legal matters, public policy, or moral philosophical inquiries. Candidates need not have prior legal knowledge. However, having a general awareness of contemporary moral and legal issues will be beneficial in answering the questions. The questions are targeted to test the candidate's skills and abilities in:

    • Identifying and inferring principles and rules outlined in the passage
    • Applying the rules and principles in several fact situations
    • Understanding the altered application of the changes in rules and principles to various fact situations

    CLAT 2025 for Postgraduate LLM Degree (1 Year)

    The PG-Clat 2025 is an entrance examination for entry to the law study programme at the Postgraduate level. The CLAT test is conducted to test the candidate's abilities in comprehension. The examination is for 2 hours in an Objective type examination.  The exam is for 120 Mark where candidates will be asked 120 Multiple-choice questions. A negative marking of 0.25 is detected for every wrong answer.

    Eligibility for CLAT Postgraduate LLM Degree

    Candidates  applying for the CLAT 2025 PG exam must have an LLB degree or equivalent, in the following categories:

    • General Candidates: Minimum 50 % ( Fifty Percent)
    • SC/ST/PWD Candidates: Minimum 45% (Forty-five Percent)
    • Candidates appearing in the qualifying exam (LLB or equivalent in April/May) can also sit for the CLAT 2025

    Syllabus for PG-CLAT 2025

    The PG-CLT 2025 test has only one section wherein candidates will be tested on their comprehension skills and knowledge across diverse legal areas, based on the mandatory subjects they have studied in their undergraduate programme. The subjects include:

    • Constitutional Law
    • Jurisprudence
    • Administrative Law
    • Law of Contract
    • Torts
    • Family Law
    • Criminal Law
    • Property Law
    • Company Law
    • Public International Law
    • Tax Law
    • Intellectual Property Law
    • Environmental Law
    • Labour and Industrial Law

    The questions will be in the form of passages extracted from primary legal materials like course decisions of importance across diverse law fields, statutes or regulations. Candidates will be required to answer a series of questions following the passages. The examination is conducted to test the candidate's strengths, abilities and knowledge, including:

    • Reading, comprehension and understanding of the issues, arguments and viewpoints outlined in the passage
    • Awareness and understanding of the legal issues, and facts corresponding to and arising out of the passage
    • Awareness of the judgement or statute from where the passage is extracted
    • Summarizing the passage 
    • Application of the candidate's legal knowledge to the law the passages discuss. 

    CLAT 2025 FAQs

     Is the CLAT examination difficult to pass?

    CLAT being a national level examination may be a little challenging. However, with proper guidance and preparation, any aspiring candidate can clear the CLAT exam. 

    How can I prepare for the CLAT examination?

    CLAT examination at both the UG and PG levels may be hard without proper preparation. One of the best ways to prepare for your CLAT is to enrol in a course that gives comprehensive coaching for the examination. This is, however, not a sacrosanct, only a definite path. Candidates can still stick to self-preparation by following a structured study plan. 

    Candidates must ensure sticking to section-wise study plans and develop exam-tackling strategies for each of the sections. They should look out for the best books and study materials for their studies. Regular practice by referring to previous years' question papers will prove significantly helpful. This will help you have a grasp of what questions are likely to come. You will also learn time management, considering how much amount of time should you give per question. 

    Is CLAT LLM different from CLAT LLB?

    Yes. While both are law degrees, CLAT 2025 LLM and LLB are targeted towards different cohorts. The LLB is a 5 year integrated undergraduate degree where students after their 12 standard can sit for the CLAT 2025. On the contrary, the LLM degree is focused on candidates who already have an LLB or equivalent degree and the CLAT 2025  examination evaluates candidates seeking admission to LLM degree programmes.

    Do CLAT 2025 PG and UG have the same syllabus?

    No, the syllabus for PG (LLM) and UG (LLB) CLAT 2025 have different syllabus structures. The LLM examination will be more legally focused and require candidates to have knowledge across the varied Law subjects. The LLB examination has a different structure that tests student's knowledge at the standard 12 level.
